Fellowship in Periodontics

 

We offer a one-year full-time Fellowship in Periodontics and comprises of didactic lectures and clinical sessions. The course aims to equip the general dentist with the knowledge  and skills required to diagnose and treatment of periodontal diseases and peri-implant diseases

Dr. N.D. Jayakumar, Dr. Sheeja Varghese, Dr. G. Kaarthikeyan, Dr. Sankari and Dr. R. Jaiganesh are our most experienced faculty in the Department of Periodontics, guiding various Ph.D students over the past few years. Fifteen candidates including five of our faculty are currently pursuing their Ph.Ds with Saveetha University.

 
 
 

Post Graduate Program: Master of Dental Surgery (M.D.S. PERIODONTICS)

The M.D.S. Periodontology program is a 3-year program that has been existence since the past 20 years. The course is designed such that the graduating periodontist is equipped well with both knowledge and skills to embark on his journey and embrace the ever-changing field of dentistry.

Academic Training

Our post-graduate training includes a course on Applied Basic Medical Sciences (ABMS), seminars in various topics in Periodontology and Implantology and Inter-disciplinary journal discussion courses in the fields of Oral Microbiology and Immunology and Oral Implantology. We have a module based academic training in which the students learn specific fields in the subject to the core.

Clinical Training

The Post-graduates are trained in all aspects of clinical periodontics including microsurgical assisted and Laser assisted procedures and Dental Implants.

Research

Post-graduates are encouraged to undertake five short-term research projects annually. They are also trained to perform systematic reviews that pertain to their dissertation. Our college is established with state of the art in-house research lab facilities including molecular biology lab, material testing and stem cell bank. Students have a great platform to explore their research interest.

Fellowship in Laser dentistry

  • This is a 6 months part time program in association with Kp institute of Laser studies, that has four modules. It includes didactic lectures and extensive clinical training from internationally renowned faculty.

  • At the end of the program the students will understand the physics and working of a Laser unit.

  • The rationale of using various lasers such as Erbium laser, diode laser, CO2 and Nd:YAG laser , its range of clinical applications ,perform procedures in soft and hard tissues using a Erbium and diode LASER, document the cases and the importance of LASER safety and the guidelines for the same will be taught  in detail.

  • This program with state of art infrastructure aims to equip the student with all aspects in the field of cutting edge technology such as Laser dentistry. 

 

 

Undergraduate Program: Bachelor of Dental Surgery (B.D.S.)

Training in Periodontics begins in the first year of B.D.S. with an introduction to the subject that is covered in the Fundamentals of Dentistry, Dental Armamentarium  in the second year  and Practice Management in the third year of B.D.S. The core subject is taught in the fourth year of the program and includes training in clinical skills, academic content and research work.

 
 

Academic Training

Our students are introduced to Periodontics from the first year of their undergraduate training using innovative teaching methods such as Multiple Interactive Learning Algorithm  (MILA), the use of flipped classes and iBooks to enhance their learning experience.

 

Clinical Training

Our undergraduate students perform the maximum number of periodontal procedures amongst all dental colleges across the country. We train our students to use iPad-based Hospital Management Systems for periodontal charting and treatment planning. In addition, other unique aspects include the use of ultrasonic scalers from the third year of B.D.S. and training to perform minor periodontal surgical cases and also periodontal flap surgeries.

 

Research

The department encourages under-graduate students to undertake short-term projects in various disciplines of Periodontics and publish their research with reputed journals. Our college is established with state of the art in-house research lab facilities including molecular biology lab, material testing and stem cell bank. Students have a great platform to explore their research interest.
